Bogart, Humphrey
Born December 25, 1899, New York
January 14th 1957
After failing to complete preparation for the study of medicine, Bogart spent some time in the US Navy before going on to manage a stage company. He had some minor roles in films and also performed on stage, but his breakthrough did not come until 1936 when he starred in The Petrified Forest. His career was given the boost it required, and Bogart, aka Bogey, went on to star in some classic Hollywood movies including The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep and Casablanca.
Bogart was famous for having a trademark lisp. The stories as to how he acquired the lisp are numerous. An official press statement claimed that during World War 1 a shrapnel injury had occurred and the insufficient surgery performed had left him with a lisp. Other stories include Bogart being hit in the mouth with handcuffs, and also of Bogart being hit in the face by his father when he was a boy.
Bogart starred in Howard Hawke’s 1944 production To Have and Have Not. It was at this time that Bogart first met husky voiced actress Lauren Bacall. The two became married and enjoyed a loving relationship which reached the time of his death in 1957.
