Charlie Chaplin Biography
Born April 16, 1889, London, England
Died 25th December, 1977, Switzerland
Chaplin is a true icon of the Hollywood silent movies, although he did also go on to appear in ‘talkies’. His film character “The Little Tramp” is one that he is often associated. The most famous images of Chaplin see him wearing the trademark oversized shoes and trousers, ill fitting jacket, moustache and walking cane.
His acting career began in childhood, with his first appearances on stage being reported at the tender age of five. Later Chaplin went on to write, direct, produce and star in all his movies.
His personal life became somewhat troubled, with US governors questioning Chaplin’s morals and allegiances, even hinting at communist tendencies. Although there was no evidence to substantiate this, Chaplin decided to leave the USA, which he had made his home, for Switzerland, where he lived in retirement.
In 1972 Chaplin made a return visit to the US to receive a special Oscar honouring his lifetime achievements in the movies. He was knighted by the Queen of England in 1975. He died in his sleep on Christmas Day 1977.
Chaplin was married a total of four times and was father to eleven children.
